Massachusetts Vehicle Inspections: What You Need to Know

To keep our roads safe and our air clean, Massachusetts requires all registered vehicles to undergo an annual safety and emissions inspection. Whether you’re a new resident or a long-time driver, here is a quick guide to the state’s requirements.

Quick Facts

  • Cost: $35 for standard passenger vehicles.

  • Frequency: Once every 12 months.

  • Grace Period: New registrations must be inspected within 7 days of the registration date.

  • What to Bring: You must provide a valid, original Vehicle Registration.

  • Duration: Expect to wait 10-15 minutes for inspection to be completed.

  • Please Note: we only do vehicles up to 10,000 lbs GVWR.

The Two-Part Inspection

1. Safety Test We check the essential components of your vehicle to ensure it is road-ready. This includes:

  • Braking system, steering, and suspension.

  • Tires and wheels.

  • All exterior lights and turn signals.

  • Windshield, wipers, and window tint.

  • Horn and exhaust system.

2. Emissions Test (OBD) Most vehicles manufactured in 2011 or later must pass an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) test.

Pro Tip: If your "Check Engine" light is on, your vehicle will not pass the emissions test. We recommend having any diagnostic codes addressed before your inspection.

We’ve Got Your Back!

Nobody likes a "Fail" sticker over a simple fix. If we notice a burnt-out light bulb or a torn wiper blade during the inspection, we can replace them on the spot. We’ll get you squared away and back on the road with a passing sticker in no time.

And hey, consider us your car’s personal backup—if we spot an old sticker while you’re fueling up, we’ll give you a neighborly nudge so you can get it handled before the state notices!

Understanding the Results

If your vehicle does not pass, you will receive a Rejection (R) Sticker:

  • Red "R" (Safety Failure): Your vehicle has a safety defect and is a hazard to drive. It must be repaired and re-tested immediately.

  • Black "R" (Emissions Failure): You have 60 days to complete repairs and pass a re-test.

Free Re-Tests: If your vehicle fails, you are entitled to one free re-test within 60 calendar days, provided it is performed at our station.
